African armed forces in cinema

The ins, outs and underbellies of armies in Africa
The weight of the colonial past
By Thomas Richard
English

The representation of African armies in film has been influenced by the colonial legacy and a certain number of archetypes formed right from the period of conquest. These armies have essentially been envisaged through the lens of narrative lines organized around a two-sided face-off, topics of inversion, opposition and great imperfection compared to foreign armies. The aim of this article is to examine this relationship, its use and to see under what conditions it can be deconstructed.
