African Artists: Musical Creation and a Misunderstanding of Migration

Interview
By Sébastien Lagrave
English

Sébastien Lagrave became director of the Africolor Music Festival in 2012, an atypical African music concert series created in 1989 by Philippe Conrath. In this interview, Lagrave defines the polymorphic term “African musics”. He also revisits the inherently political dimension of these “musics” by looking at male and female artists, singers, and musicians who are forced into sometimes difficult migratory journeys or caught up in transnational flows. He explains how the positioning of the Africolor festival, midway between an artistic proposition and a cultural mediation, allows the performers and the audience to go beyond an outdated cultural “verticality”, that is, an outmoded cultural hierarchy.
