This article analyzes popular Tunisian music performances by “border jumpers” – illegal immigrants. The author, using a body of fifty-four songs, reveals migrants’ imaginings and deep social dynamics. After exploring the context in which the songs are sung, he explores five prevalent topics: (1) migrants’ desires; (2) border-crossing dangers; (3) exiles’ pain; (4) family suffering; and (5) Divine Will acceptance. His analysis concludes that the lyrics from songs about the harga (the phenomenon of migrating illegally), while not revolutionary in the classic and direct sense of the word, are potentially very subversive as they promote voting with one’s feet.
