Madagascar is a secular state. However, the Catholic Church has always held sway over political life. The Church has analyzed Malagasy social and political life since the beginning of colonial times. Through an unprecedented analysis of the writings by Catholic bishops, this article studies crisis-interpretation frameworks created by the clergy. It allows us to see to what extent recurring elements of crises have been identified by the Malagasy Catholic Church in its political analyses since 1889.
