This article discusses the difficulties north Niger’s nomadic herdsmen face in pursuing their way of life and cope with climatic, political, and economic constraints. Aside from the problems arising from insecurity, isolation, and land-grabbing, the herdsmen must deal with international mining companies operating as indifferent outsiders in their grazing lands—particularly at the Azelik uranium mine where they experience confiscation of grazing trails and hindrance of herd movements, in violation of their nationally recognized and lawful rights to use the land.
