In the Sahara and the Sahel, many environmental and social variables affect the dynamics of grazing lands, resulting in complex, difficult to predict changes. What practices should herdsmen follow to ensure access to pastoral resources? How can they adapt in the face of uncertainty? Given these complex factors and the great variation in animal husbandry systems, the authors—agronomists and ecologists—suggest a range of different strategies.
