The Arab Spring Sketched by the Political Cartoonist Godfrey Mwampembwa ("Gado")

What are the Consequences of the Arab Spring for Sub-Saharan Africa?
"If They Can Do It, Why Can't We?"
By Alexander A. Panov
English

In this paper, Alexander Panov analyzes and interprets the work of Gado, one of Africa's best-know political caricaturists. Panov uses a series of press cartoons about the Arab Spring, published from October 2010 through December 2011, to decipher perceptions about the sociopolitical process in North and East Africa. He finds that when these cartoons were published, many activists, journalists, commentators and readers thought that the popular uprisings in North Africa could also become a reality in Sub-Saharan Africa.
