The black lower-middle class in Johannesburg defines itself through its purchasing power and the goods it owns. To get an idea of these households' social networks, the author studied lower-middle-class consumption practices vis-à-vis the surrounding informal institutions for socialization and community solidarity. Despite the enthusiasm for mass consumption in South Africa, community traditions remain strong and lines between racial groups remain visible.
