Nigeria has captured an immense popular audience throughout sub-Saharan Africa with countless videos produced by a unique industry. These “Nollywood” films are distributed primarily through informal networks. Paltry production budgets most often result in levels of technical and artistic quality far below international standards, meaning that Nigerian movies do not feature in film festivals and are confined to the small screen. However, the recent appearance of a multiplex cinema chain may change the situation as some producers have started to successfully produce films for the big screen.
