The Post-apartheid Film Industry in South Africa

Africa’s Film Industry
Production, Institution, and Distribution in South Africa

Increasingly seen at Western movie festivals and theatres, contemporary South African cinema is not something new to emerge in the post-apartheid era, having existed since the beginning of the twentieth century. Contemporary South African films are supported by an industry unique to Africa, one that is inseparable from the history of apartheid. They reflect the true colors of the “rainbow nation” and its reopening to the world. Today, the straightjacket of the apartheid system lies in tatters, but the South African film industry must deal with some legacies of the past to fully enter the post-apartheid era and project itself into the future.
