Nordic countries occupy a special place in the international public development aid world. After the Second World War, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark — all countries with no colonial history — cultivated a reputation for altruism and humanitarianism. However, the history of Nordic aid shows that national interests do influence public aid policies toward developing countries. Beyond their similarities, each country maintains its own concept of foreign policy.
