Madagascar is going through its fourth political crisis since gaining independence in 1960. While each crisis is different, they share two main characteristics: isolated clashes between a small circle of political and economic elites seeking power, and the Malagasy people’s near-exclusion from political participation. Political turmoil obscures a structural social and economic crisis brought on by the failure of development efforts.
