Cybercrime: A Threat to Development

Internet Fraud in Côte d’Ivoire

In this paper, the participation of African countries’ in the information society is presented as a major challenge, and, in recent years, telecommunications have experienced a huge growth on the continent. In Côte d’Ivoire, for example, investment in this sector reached a total of almost 1.5 billion Euros over ten years. However, although the economy of the ICT-related sector is in good health, the emergence and scope of Internet scams (particularly among the younger generations) represents a real threat to the country’s development.
