Football is firmly anchored in the economic and political fabric of African countries. This paper shows both how the federating power of football is regularly exploited by politicians, and how major sports events are used to serve political and financial interests. Although the positive impacts of the World Cup are uncertain, this paper shows that football is a source of dynamism and change. A grassroots analysis of football shows that it very often eludes the grasp of established powers.
