Family and Kinship Ties in Development: An Economist's Perspective

An analysis of the links between culture and development has resulted in strongly conflicting, even stereotyped, viewpoints that are in need of clarification. After surveying the literature on the economic impact of family structure, this paper underlines the comparative advantage of families and kinship groups as market substitutes, in particular referring to informal insurance and credit markets. Family involvement may, however, result in inefficiencies.
