The Rivalry between China and India in Southern Africa

China and India have become major players in Africa since the turn of the 20th century. They are both particularly interested in its raw materials and hydrocarbons and are both therefore pushing to strengthen their influence on the continent. Despite the cordial visit by Hu Jintao to India in November 2006, India and China are still engaged in a fierce rivalry in Africa, and especially for Southern Africa's promising consumer market (the Republic of South Africa), its mining resources (Zimbabwe and Zambia) and, of course its hydrocarbons (Angola).
