Ten years on since the democratic transition, the labor market in South Africa still lies at the heart of many of the country's development challenges. In this paper, a first section examines the characteristics of the South African labor market, focusing particularly on employment and unemployment. This is followed by a discussion about the changes and trends affecting the labor market. A final section examines some of the key debates currently underway.
