Since the colonial period, the inhabitants of the Tahoua region (Niger) have practiced circular migration, in particular to Libya and the Gulf of Guinea. Since the ’00s, their migratory practices have been influenced by the spread of irrigation technology, the arrival of big development projects, and worsening security conditions in their destination countries. The main objective of young men has changed from “migration” to “irrigation.” However, these two practices are interrelated, and also linked to participation in development project activities.
