The Sahelian Great Green Wall: Showcase, mirage, and reality
By Fatoumata Ndiaye, Pierre Jacquemot
English
Across Africa, from Senegal to Djibouti, the world’s longest green wall is being built: the Great Green Wall. It will be 7,600 km long. Much more than a reforestation program, this vast project, which will span eleven countries, aims to transform arid areas, among the most fragile in the world, into dynamic rural hubs of production and development. It addresses multiple challenges in the fight against desertification, including economic issues, food security, climate change, and biodiversity conservation. A wall to unlock the potential of millions of people in the Sahel. But how credible is it, technically, organizationally, and financially?
