Abobo is one of thirteen urban communes that make up the autonomous district of Abidjan. Due to socio-historical circumstances, the suburb of Abobo played a leading role as host to the Rassemblement des républicains (Rally of the Republicans, RDR), at a critical time during its inception. Its support for the party only strengthened during the long military and political crisis from 1999 to 2011. Once Alassane Ouattara came to power, the inhabitants, and especially the young people of the commune, expected some form of compensation for their long and arduous commitment. Since the militants’ expectations were never met, a sense of disappointment has taken hold.
