In a unique way, Gabon's public services tend to remain a "sure bet" for those who seek an elevated social status and a stable income. The prestige associated with being a public servant arises from the access to certain coveted consumer goods and the ability to care for parents or to attend certain schools. Beyond prestige, such a position may lead to a powerful position in a person's family, village or town. Taking a job as a civil servant remains the sole way for a Gabonese to avoid poverty, enjoy employment security, and bring together several activities.
