Transformation of the Nana Benz of Lomé—A Comprador Bourgeoisie Seen through Fortune and Decline
This paper presents the evolving situation that the Nana Benz have been experiencing since the Trente Glorieuses (Glorious Thirty), as an illustration of the ongoing transformation of the African middle classes that have existed for some decades. We are witnessing the emergence of a second and even third generation of Nana Benz who are more exposed to globalization than the older generation. This new constraint calls for adaptation and accommodation by the Nana Benz (whether voluntary or imposed), so as not to disappear on the sinking boat of the same “unbridled capitalism” that created them. We present the Nana Benz in terms of their social representations, revisit continuities and ruptures in their history, and conclude with what makes up the essential identity of the Nana Benz today.
