Kenya’s Middle Class and Electoral Democracy

By Hervé Maupeu
English

Kenya’s middle class is defined by its material culture, which provides an approximate indicator of status. However, from a political point of view, middle class demands remain at a different level. Electoral conflicts and a debate about the constitution have had a strong impact on the middle class, whose members no longer expect the State to provide public services. Rather, they simply want it to provide a legal environment that allows for the management of risks related to property and social matters, especially health and retirement insurance.
