Land: Object of and Condition for African Agricultural Investments

Agricultural Investment in Africa
What Land Rights Does Africa Have?
By Alain Rochegude
English

In Africa, land rights should first of all allow access to land. For family farmers, land rights are generally customary, and innovative procedures can help secure these rights. Investors prefer property titles and/or land grants from the State. Land rights may also be used as loan collateral. However, environmental constraints limit land rights due to the exploitation of natural resources (renewable or otherwise), which competes with agricultural uses. Governance must be able to depend on coherent land and natural resource laws.
