In Africa agriculture finds itself at the confluence of debates on food security, economics, and the environment. Can the African agricultural sector simultaneously feed a growing population and protect the environment both locally and globally? Which option (or options) should be encouraged? To minimize the environmental impact of future growth in agricultural production, should public policies favor an increase in yields (intensification) or an increase in land under cultivation (extension)? We outline the debate.
