Ports and Commerce in West Africa

Regional integration in West Africa is the development strategy adopted by the regional economic communities. As such, the region’s underperforming transport systems are likely to hinder the success of this strategy, which is based on developing regional and international trade. However, the Côte d’Ivoire crises, which virtually paralyzed transport in the region, has served as a catalyst for restructuring the region’s transportation sector. This paper illustrates this trend with examples of changes in the maritime and road transport sectors.
