The case of tomato farming in the region of Abengourou in Côte d'Ivoire
By Laurence Tujague-GibourgEnglish
Traditionally a cocoa producing region, the eastern central region of C?te d'Ivoire is affected by deforestation and ageing cocoa trees. In this context, developing vegetable (and mostly tomato) production has been a response by rural people to the issue of decreasing incomes for over ten years. This paper examines the conditions necessary for achieving autonomy for tomato growers in a social context marked by a high degree of hierarchical constraint.
