Beyond the need for increased funding, addressing the urgent and complex challenges of sustainable development will require the production and diffusion of new academic and technical knowledge? in biology and physics as well as in the human and social sciences. To this end, clear political choices and adequate provisions should be made in favor of building research capacity in the South, promoting North-South and South-South partnerships, and quickly applying research findings to the most pressing development issues.
